Adapt to Your New Life: 5-Step Daily Care Routine
After an osseointegration surgery, cleaning the part of the implant that protrudes through the skin (stoma) becomes a simple but essential part of your daily routine—just like brushing your teeth. Here’s a healthy and hassle-free way to care for it, which only takes about 5 minutes a day:
1. Start with Gentle Cleaning
Clean the area where the implant meets the skin at least once a day, preferably in the morning, using lukewarm water and a fragrance-free, mild soap. This removes sweat, dust, and other debris that can accumulate throughout the day.
Tip: You can easily do this while taking a shower.
2. Use a Soft Brush for Extra Care
Sometimes small crusts may form around the implant. Never pick at them with your nails! Instead, moisten a soft-bristled toothbrush with lukewarm water and gently brush around the implant in circular motions. This keeps the area clean and smooth at all times.
3. Complete Drying Is Essential
Bacteria thrive in moist environments. After cleaning, make sure the area is completely dry. Use a soft towel or disposable paper towels with a gentle patting motion (do not rub) to remove moisture.
Tip: Allow the area to air dry for a short while afterward to keep your skin fresh.
4. Perform a Quick Daily Check (30 Seconds in Front of a Mirror)
After cleaning, take a moment to inspect the area with a mirror:
Is there excessive redness?
Do you notice unusual discharge or pain?
This quick check helps detect any potential issues early, allowing you to consult your doctor promptly if needed.
5. Secure the Skin (If Recommended)
If your doctor advises, use special bandages or protective devices designed to keep the soft tissue around the implant stable. Preventing movement around the implant forms the strongest protective barrier.
Remember: By following these five steps consistently, you greatly reduce the risk of infection and maintain a healthy, lifelong connection with your prosthesis.
